Hello!

Now that the holidays have come and gone, it’s time to get focused on what we want to achieve in the new year. If you’re like most people, health will become a top priority in January. We’ve given ourselves permission to splurge a little and to enjoy our favorite holiday foods, and we’re not yet into the new year where we’ll really dive in and make positive changes. So what do we do this week? Well, I have an idea.

Water is so important to maintain your health and drinking plenty of it is an easy habit to incorporate NOW. Start this week drinking enough water (at least 1/2 of your body weight each day) by always having it with you. Taking this important step now will put you one step closer to reaching your health goals for the new year.

Check out the article of the week below for more tips. We hope you all enjoy this last week of 2011!

The Team at FFC

DRINK UP!

Are you topping off your inner tank?

Are you overlooking the forgotten nutrient that is key to your good health as well as your weight loss goals? The adult human body is about two-thirds water, and this fact alone suggests that this fluid has an important part to play in health and well-being. Actually, all of our biochemical, physiological and neurological processes depend, to some degree, on water. For instance, water makes up the bulk of our blood volume. If we do not keep ourselves properly topped up with fluid, this may be reflected in a slightly reduced blood volume and blood pressure. The end result here is that our circulation will fail to deliver oxygen and nutrients to all our tissues and organs with optimal efficiency.

Circulation is key to ensuring proper detoxification of the body and elimination of waste through the kidneys. Even relatively mild dehydration might therefore increase the risk of toxic build-up in the body, which is likely to have a negative impact on our health and wellbeing. Water is also important for nerve-transmission in the body. Running low on fluid can therefore have consequences for brain function. Water basically helps all body and brain processes run that much more smoothly. No wonder, then, that while the human body can usually go a few weeks or even months without food, it can only manage a few days without water.

Because water plays a critical role in the body’s most fundamental processes, dehydration can manifest in a myriad of ways. Lethargy (of both body and mind) is a common symptom of dehydration. Individuals generally find that getting a bit more water into their system buoys up their mental and physical energy, often within half an hour or so.

Another quite common consequence of dehydration is headache. One theory about how this happens is that running low on fluid can cause the membranes that cover the brain (called meninges) to exert some `thing I know for sure is that many individuals with “mystery” headaches end up banishing them simply by drinking more water.

Dehydration can cause constipation, too. When the body runs dry, it does its utmost to extract every last drop of water from waste matter in the large colon. The end result can be a bit like a cork stuck in the neck of a wine bottle. Keeping well hydrated is often a crucial tactic in keeping our bowels moving along nicely.

For optimal health and well-being, it pays to keep topped off with water.

Our need for water is dependent on many different factors including propensity to sweating, size, activity levels, temperature, humidity and how much water might be taken in from, say, fruits and vegetables. What this means is that it’s very difficult to make blanket recommendations about water intake. Because of this, it’s better for us to tune into personal indicators of our state of hydration.

Thirst is not a good indicator, as by the time the body is thirsty it is often quite dehydrated indeed. A good gauge, though, to the state of our hydration is the color of our urine. Essentially, the paler our urine is, the better our state of hydration. The aim is to drink enough water to keep your urine pale yellow in color throughout the day. If your urine color strays into darker tones, particularly if this is accompanied by a noticeable smell, then it’s time to step up your water intake. Most individuals, most of the time, need to drink in the order of 2–3 liters of water each day to maintain a good state of hydration and pale urine.

For many people, the idea of drinking 2 or 3 liters of water a day seems like quite a feat. The one big piece of advice I have about getting plenty of water into the body each day is: keep water by you. When individuals have water in front of them, they tend to drink a lot more than if they repeatedly need to get it from, say, the fridge or the water cooler down the end of the corridor.

If you’re doing the gardening, keep a bottle of water with you. Put a bottle of water on your desk at work, and make sure there is water available in meetings. Put a bottle of water in the car and carry one in your briefcase, rucksack or sports bag when you are out and about. If you keep water by you, you’re most likely to get through the decent quantities of the stuff that your body needs.

Hello all!

We hope you’re having a lovely start to your week and the holiday season. Below is a great article that gives us (and our children) tips to enjoying the holidays this year. By giving, serving, and enjoying our loved ones, we can transform this season from a stressful time to a relaxing, enjoyable experience.

Enjoy! And remember that it’s CHRISTMAS WEEK AT FFC! We’ll have lots of fun goodies and activities for you this week, with the main event being PICTURES WITH SANTA ON MONDAY, DEC. 12TH! We are very excited and hope you will join us.

The Team at FFC

Teach Your Kids the Spirit of Giving this Season

“The gimmes” are all around us during the holiday season. You know—“Gimme this,” “Gimme that,” “I want this,” “I want that.” It can be hard for children—and parents alike—to look beyond all of the product-driven hoopla to see what the holidays are really about.

It’s not the actual gifts but what’s behind the presents that’s important—the spirit of giving. Help your kids learn the fun of giving, and how rewarding it can be to look for, make, and wrap something special—or do something special—for people they care about and others who are in need. Here are four ways you can help decrease materialism in your kids and reinforce the real reason for the season.

1. Teach Kids to Question Marketing Messages

From the TV commercials during Saturday morning cartoons to the promos on the backs of cereal boxes, marketing messages inundate kids of all ages. And to them, everything looks ideal—something they simply have to have.

The advertisements kids see around the holidays can help foster unrealistic expectations and lead to disappointment. After seeing their “wish list” items presented perfectly all around them, it’s hard for reality to measure up when they actually open their gifts. Of course, it’s nearly impossible to eliminate all exposure to marketing messages. You can certainly turn off the TV or at least limit your kids’ watching time, but they’ll still see and hear advertisements for the latest gizmos and must-haves at every turn.

But what you can do is:

• Explain when your kids ask for products they see advertised that commercials and other ads are designed to make people want things they don’t necessarily need, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). And these ads are often meant to make us think that these products will make us happier somehow. Talking to kids about what things are like in reality can help put things into perspective.

• Talk to your children about what they think about the products they see advertised as you’re watching TV, listening to the radio, reading magazines, or shopping together. Ask some thought-provoking questions such as:

1. “Do you think you need that product? If so, why?”

2. “Do you think that product really looks, tastes, or works the same way as it seems to in the ad?”

3. “Do you think that product will make you happy?”

• Limit your child’s exposure to TV commercials, by:

1. having your kids watch public television stations

2. taping programs—without the commercials

3. buying or renting children’s videos or DVDs

Teach your children that not everything they want can always be theirs. Also explain to your kids that a little “want” here and there isn’t all bad. The key with wanting things, as with most things, is to do it in moderation and to fully appreciate what you’re given. Emphasize that the holidays are a special time, when a lot of love and thought is put into gift giving.

2. Focus on Family Traditions

Traditions that center around family or friends can be a great way to put meaning back into the holidays. Here are a couple of ideas:

• Talk about which family traditions your family loves the most. Then figure out how you can put more emphasis on them. If you love the tradition of lighting the menorah, get together as a group to make your own candles. If you enjoy the family trip to pick out a tree, make it an all-day event in which you head to a tree farm to choose your own.

• Find out what the holidays mean to others. Have your children talk to a grandparent, parent, uncle, or aunt about how they spent the holidays growing up. Some holiday traditions that used to be strong—such as neighborhood caroling are all but lost today. Maybe you’d like to revive some of these as a way to share some holiday spirit with your family, friends, or community.

• Build some new traditions. If you don’t have any family traditions, it’s never too late to start. Get together around activities that you all enjoy, such as cooking or ice skating. Ask your kids what they would enjoy doing every year and make an effort to do it.

3. Teach Children to Give of Themselves

Volunteerism, especially around the holidays, offers an ideal opportunity for families to have fun and feel closer to each other at the same time. Community service helps to drive home the message that giving is much more than laying down cash for the hot gift of the season or scrambling around to buy mounds of presents for a gazillion people. Volunteerism can show kids that giving your time, effort, and kindness is so much more rewarding than just expecting to receive mountains of material goods. Also, if volunteering begins at an early age, it can become part of a child’s life—something he or she may just expect and want to do. It can teach kids:

• The knowledge that one person can make a difference. A wonderful, empowering message for a child is that he or she is important enough to have an impact on someone or something else.

• The benefit of sacrifice. By giving up a toy to a less fortunate child, a child learns that it’s good to sacrifice sometimes. Cutting back on recreation time to help others tells kids that there are important things other than ourselves and our immediate needs.

• Tolerance. Working in community service can bring kids and teens in touch with people of different backgrounds, abilities, ethnicities, ages, and education and income levels, which can be a particularly important point to make around the holidays. They’ll likely find that even the most diverse individuals can be united by common values.

• To be even more appreciative of what they have. By helping others who aren’t as fortunate, kids can better understand all the remarkable things they should be grateful for in their own lives.

4. Be a Good Holiday Role Model

Show your children that the holidays can be joyous and fulfilling, not just a stress-ridden time that revolves around marathon shopping trips. Emphasize to them early on that it’s not about getting piles of presents but giving and receiving a few heartfelt gifts. By starting early with traditions that emphasize the true meaning of the holidays and the caring thoughts behind gift giving, you can help to mold your kids’ perspectives on the holiday season and what it means to both give and receive all year long.

Hello all!

We hope your week has started wonderfully. If you haven’t already, please be sure to come by and contribute to our Gratitude Tree. Below is this week’s Article of the Week, and we encourage all of you to take a copy when you come in for your adjustment and PASS IT ON. We could all use a little reminder to stop and remember all that there is to be thankful for.

Have an amazing holiday! We are so grateful for all of YOU!

The Team at FFC

A THANK-YOU A DAY

The health benefits of gratitude, which is really the same thing as love, are an amazing example of just how sturdy the bridge is between the mind, body, and emotions. Research shows that heart-centered feelings associated with gratitude, appreciation, and caring are health enhancing. When you find one thing, however small, to be thankful for and you hold that feeling for as little as 15–20 seconds, many subtle and beneficial physiologic changes take place in your body:

Stress hormone levels of cortisol and norepinephrine decrease, creating a cascade of beneficial metabolic changes such as an enhanced immune system.

Coronary arteries relax, thus increasing the blood supply to your heart.

Heart rhythm becomes more harmonious, which positively affects your mood and all other bodily organs.

Breathing becomes deeper, thus increasing the oxygen level of your tissues.

Other scientific evidence that gratitude improves health comes from research accumulated by Robert A. Emmons, professor of psychology at the University of California, Davis. Emmons found that gratitude makes you healthier, smarter, and more energetic. He also showed that people practicing gratitude daily, such as writing in a gratitude journal, reported higher levels of alertness, enthusiasm, determination, attentiveness, and energy than those who didn’t.

If all of this happens when you focus for just 15–20 seconds on something that brings you pleasure, joy, or a feeling of gratitude, imagine what would happen to your health if you were able to cultivate thoughts of appreciation on a consistent and regular basis.

Practice Makes Perfect

Cultivating gratitude, like maintaining strong muscles and bones, takes discipline and will. That’s right. It takes practice to feel gratitude and reap its physical and emotional benefits. There are valid physiologic reasons why focusing on gratitude isn’t easy. Physically, we humans evolved along with a nervous system wired to ensure our survival by keeping us alerted to possible danger from the occasional wild animal or violent storm—events that were relatively infrequent within a life span. Now fast-forward that same nervous system to our current era of mass media, when all of the possible dangerous events from the entire planet are beamed into our living rooms day and night. You can see why holding thoughts of appreciation is hard.

Get a piece of paper and list your blessings. Pay special attention to the people who enhance your life on all levels, for example, the checkout person at your favorite grocery store, the FedEx driver, or a sunny, optimistic coworker. This exercise can literally change your life. The more you notice the people and things you are grateful for, the more of them you’ll attract. And thanking those who bestow these blessings enriches your life in ways you never thought possible. And also uplifts them.

In my book Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom I wrote, “Thinking with your heart takes practice, but if you faithfully learn to start thinking with your heart and pay attention to areas of your life that bring you joy and fulfillment, over time you will evoke biochemical changes in your body that will recharge your batteries.” In addition to enhancing your energy levels and reducing stress, recognizing and appreciating life’s many blessings is one of the most powerful ways I know of to enhance the immune system, balance your hormones, and promote heart health.

Developing an attitude of gratitude is more powerful than you may realize. Since what we choose to focus on expands, a grateful attitude will change your way of thinking, and therefore your way of living. Start today and create a practice of focusing on something you’re grateful for at least once throughout your day. Focusing on things you’re already thankful for will bring more good into your life.

We are focusing on gratitude for the month of November, and invite you to do the same. Nov. 14th-18th is “Gratitude Week” at FFC. When you come in for an adjustment, you’ll be able to write a thank you note or contribute to our gratitude tree. See the Article of the Week below to learn ways to shift your thinking to include gratitude habits. We look forward to hearing what you’re thankful for!

Yours in Health,

How often are you grateful? Like many people, you probably focus on gratitude when something great happens in your life, and maybe once a day on Thanksgiving. If you are part of a rare group of people, you might actually keep a daily gratitude journal and take time to reflect on your blessings regularly.

These are beneficial habits, but you can also use gratitude in a more proactive way to transform your life. The way to do this is as simple as making a series of choices throughout the course of your day.

Most of us are in the habit of thinking negatively. We experience something difficult or painful in our outer environment that throws us immediately into a negative state of mind. We fluctuate between feelings of anger, resentment, annoyance, boredom, and disappointment – never once realizing that it doesn’t have to be that way!

Remember that not consciously choosing your mind-set is a choice all its own. If you don’t choose, your experiences will choose for you. Let this happen and you will soon find yourself on an emotional roller coaster with a broken “off” switch.

If you want to make gratitude a bigger part of your daily life, you need to choose it. Here are two powerful ways to do that.

1) Make gratitude a consistent focus as often as you can. Instead of allowing your outer circumstances to determine your mind-set, begin reciting positive statements like this to yourself: “I choose to be grateful for __________.”

(Choose anything and everything you can think of to be grateful for.) As you recite this statement, allow yourself to actually FEEL grateful. With practice this exercise can transform negative emotions and turn your whole attitude around.

2) Find something to be grateful for in every experience. This exercise can often be more challenging, especially when you experience difficult situations. However, remember that gratitude is a CHOICE. Just like there is usually a downside to each situation, there is also a positive side.

Which one you focus on is up to you. When something happens, either good or bad, pause for a moment and choose how you want to feel about it. The more you choose gratitude, the better your life circumstances will be – simply because you won’t be obsessing over the negatives anymore.

When you really immerse yourself in this habit, you will be amazed by the changes it inspires in you. And as you change, you will notice a corresponding change in the way people interact with you and the things that just seem to happen to you. The more positive you can be, the more positive everything else will seem!

Greetings everyone!

Healers have known for thousands of years that your body uses acute illnesses, such as flu and fever, for cleansing and healing itself. The worst thing you can do when you experience fever or other symptoms, is to suppress them with drugs. Of course, if someone is expressing symptoms it is important to support and comfort them, making sure they remain hydrated, nourished, comforted, and properly managed. Natural or holistic healthcare systems that respect symptom expression is a great way to achieve this. True health occurs when the body is able to express itself naturally.

Check out our Article of the Week in the lobby to learn more about why flu is good for you. Make it a happy, healthy week!

Hello everyone!

Most of the time, we don’t give our bodies the credit they deserve. Each human body is a complex, intricate system that is designed to sustain itself and heal itself. Check out these interesting facts about the human body. More to come next week!

Make it a great week, and remember to come in for a life-changing adjustment so that your body will be functioning at 100%!

Wonders of the Body

From Rose Panico / Bill Remling

DID YOU KNOW THAT…….

* One cubic inch of the brain’s cortex contains 10,000 miles of connecting tissue.

* Your brain gets signals from 137 million light receptors in your eyes, 100,000 hearing receptors in your ears, 3,000 taste buds in your mouth, 30,000 hat spots, 250,000 cold spots, and 500,000 touch spots on your skin.

* Electrical impulses flash along your nerves at 393 feet per second, or about 270 miles per hour.

* In nine months, 600 billion cells form an average baby.

* Your heart pumps about 2 1/2 gallons of blood per minute. If you could loan your heart to pump donor blood into pint bottles, it would fill so many bottles in one year that they could stretch from New York City to Cleveland, Ohio.

* If your blood cells were put in a single row, it would extend around the world four times at the equator. Every second between 2-3 million red blood cells are launched into the blood stream.

* There are more than 600 muscles in your body. Many muscles work in a team.

* The retina of the eye contains 137 million nerve endings that carry the picture to the brain.

* Your lungs contain a half billion tiny air sacs with a surface area of 40 to 60 square miles.

* In 70 years, your stomach will produce about 60,000 quarts of digestive juice, and it will digest about 40 tons of 80,000 pounds of food.

* Each kidney contains one million functional units that filter your blood.

* Your brain regulates, stimulates, creates and controls all these body functions and millions of others. When the body is functioning normal, we tend to forget about the very complex activities that are constantly going on. Nonetheless, the cells keep functioning and reproducing themselves.

* The organs and the glands keep regulating such diverse activities as digestion and growth, and the nerve system keeps receiving, interpreting and sending messages. Without this continuing harmony and coordinating activities, this could be no psychological life as we know it.

To be continued…

Autumn is in the air. The cool, crisp air, football games, falling leaves, pumpkins and of course the signs sprouting up everywhere advertising the ‘flu vaccine.’ And while autumn, winter, and the flu seem to go hand in hand there are steps you can take right now to protect yourself and loved ones from getting the flu this year. But beware – the flu vaccine isn’t the answer.

The CDC, doctors, pharmacists, and drug stores promote the flu vaccine as the key way to avoid the flu and suffering from these uncomfortable symptoms. What you must know is that the flu vaccine has never been proven to ward off the flu or decrease its severity. When you get the flu vaccine you risk dangerous side effects too. In fact, some of these nasty side effects are much more to worry about than the flu.

There are a number of vital ways to stay flu free this season that won’t put you at risk for any of the potentially dangerous side effects of the flu vaccine. One of the most important immune system boosters is a chiropractic adjustment! The best defense you have against the flu is a healthy immune system. Next find a high quality vitamin D3 supplement and start taking it now. Boost your intake of foods high in vitamin C during the winter months too. This can really help to strengthen your immune system and protect you from the flu today and chronic diseases tomorrow. Remember, when it comes to vitamin D, the best source is the sun. Engage in safe sun exposure, eat real foods, back up with vitamin D supplements, get plenty of rest, drink lots of pure water, and you’ll be feeling fine all winter long.

Check out our Article of the Week for more information about keeping yourself healthy this season.

Hi everyone! We wanted to share the Article of the Week with all of you. Have an amazing week!

Your FFC Family

In order to move forward, we must acknowledge the things that are holding us back. For many of us, it’s our lifestyle—the choices, behaviors, actions, and beliefs that define who we are and how we live. Changing something as fundamental and deep-seated as how we’ve lived our lives for years can be scary. However, I’ve learned that you can choose to see that change is good. When you open yourself up to new experiences, no matter how scary they may seem, you’ll be surprised at all the good that can come from them. The key is to see change as an opportunity for personal growth and professional development.

Every great philosophical mind throughout history has pointed out the importance of one undeniable metaphor—life is a journey. Some see this journey as a quest for knowledge, others as a road to self-discovery. I see it as a circle, where all our experiences affect the next, intertwining each aspect of our lives. This never-ending cycle of cause and effect creates the path that becomes our journey.

Let’s say that our journey begins the day we were born. As the days, weeks, months, and years of our lives pass by, most of us forget that this journey is a continuous process. So we spend our time thinking about the past, looking toward the future, trying to control life so that we end up where we think we want to be. True, the past and future are parts of our life’s journey, but we cannot control them. What we forget is our ability to shape our journey and create the life we want by focusing on one simple thing—this moment right now!

“Now” is a very special time in your life. You can’t change your past, but you can use it as a learning experience to help you improve your present and influence your future, which are all parts of your life journey. Every experience from your past gives you a lesson that serves as preparation for what you can become in the future.

At any given moment, you have the ability to transform, reshape, or reinvent your direction. What would you do with your life if you could have a new shot at it? Is there anything you would like to improve? How we choose to look at the present is the one thing we have control of. It is the one thing we can choose to change to our benefit. We have the power, and if we decide to improve ourselves in the present, to upgrade our belief, and strengthen our personal convictions, we’ve got a new, clean slate. In fact, we get a new clean slate every day.

Good Afternoon! We wanted to share our Article of the Week with all of you. With cold and flu season approaching, it is important to keep your nervous system, and therefore your immune system, healthy. Remember, the nervous system controls all functions of the body. Isn’t it wonderful?! Have a fabulous week, everyone, and enjoy the article!

Yours in Health,

Your FFC Family

Our Creator has given us all the power of health within our own bodies enabling your body to heal itself. It is not normal or healthy to have chronic pain or even the occasional cold or headache. A person can be unhealthy without any symptoms whatsoever. For example, 35% of all heart attacks happen without any prior symptoms or warning signs. Were those 35% healthy the day before their heart attack?

Since its inception, chiropractic has asserted that viruses and microbes don’t threaten us all equally and that a healthy immune system easily repels most invaders. The immune system protects us from the flu, as well as any other infectious disease, and strives to get us well again when we do fall ill. Our immune system, like every other system in the body, is coordinated and controlled by the nervous system. For example, nerve cell endings in the skin and white blood cells of the immune system are in intimate contact, and chemicals secreted by the nerves can shut down immune system cells nearby.

Chiropractic corrects spinal abnormalities called vertebral subluxations that result in interference of the nervous system by placing pressure on nerves. Since the nervous system controls all functions of the body, including the immune system, chiropractic care can have a positive effect on immune function.

During an immune response, the brain and the immune system ‘talk to each other’ and this process is essential for maintaining homeostasis or balance in the body. If the Nervous System is not functioning properly, then the Immune System cannot function at 100%, thus the body becomes fertile ground for bacteria, viruses and illness

Children who have regular Chiropractic adjustments have fewer colds, ear infections and flu. “People who receive regular chiropractic adjustments have immune system competency that is 200% greater than those who don’t.” (Dr. Ron Pero. New York Preventative Medicine Institute and Environmental Health at NYU)

Even though you are not sick, your body may be acquiring misalignments of the spine (subluxations) that are interfering with your nervous system and thus your immune system. Regular chiropractic check-ups can help you to maintain a healthy immune system and stave off illnesses or allergies. A chiropractic adjustment will restore the balance of your nervous system and restore the flow of energy and information throughout the body, thus validating one of the great benefits of chiropractic care!

Good Morning! Our current Article of the Week is about our part in creating our stress and simple steps we can take to reduce it. Pick up your copy in the office to learn more. Make it a great week!

Most of us create our own stress. Because deadlines don’t produce stress. Debt doesn’t produce stress. Traffic doesn’t produce stress. And having to speak in public doesn’t create stress. What causes these and countless other situations to be stressful is the “story” we make up to surround the deadline, the debt, the traffic and the presentation we have to give.

Your extraordinary imagination artfully embellishes these stories, making them threatening.

“If I’m late for the meeting I’ll get fired, won’t be able to pay my bills, I’ll lose all my friends and find myself alone, living out of my car.”

Silly isn’t it? This, from someone who claims they don’t have a creative bone in their body!

Next time you find yourself feeling the symptoms of stress, consider these simple action steps:

Breathe. Those who find themselves in a classic “fight or flight” situation don’t breathe properly. Their short, shallow breaths reduce the oxygen supply to the critical thinking portions of their brain, resulting in poor judgment and decision-making.

Listen. What story are you creating? What “movie” is playing in your head? What unlikely outcome are you projecting into the future? What are you “making up” that is causing you to experience fear? Jettison these unhelpful film clips you’re originating in your head in favor of simply stating the untainted facts about what is.

Chiropractic care can’t reduce the psychological stress in your life. However, it can increase your capacity to withstand the stress you create by reducing the “noise” in your nervous system.

We would love for you to join us at the next W.O.W. Dinner to learn more ways to reduce your stress.

Happiness & Health,
